Have you heard the term Postpartum Blues? Also known as Baby Blues, up to 80% of women experience some form of Postpartum Blues around 2-5 days after childbirth. Although it is not completely understood, symptoms of Postpartum Blues are thought to be due to rapidly changing hormone levels from childbirth, and often coinciding with the beginning of milk production.
Symptoms can include mood swings, tearfulness and unexplained crying, feeling overwhelmed and/or anxious, exhaustion, irritability, extreme sadness, restlessness, and a host of other big emotions. The symptoms can last for over 2 weeks, but will generally not stay longer than that. If these types of symptoms continue to persist, it may be an indication of something more (such as postnatal depletion, or postnatal depression), and I would strongly encourage you to reach out to your healthcare provider for support before leaving it go on for too long.
