Do You Know How To Truly Nourish Your Postpartum Body?

 

Did you answer no? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! So many women are given a lot of conflicting information when it comes to what and what not to eat in their postpartum recovery. A lot of this information is outdated, and very heavily focussed on calories for weightloss, which, in my personal opinion, is the last thing woman should be worrying about after birth!

Many ancient cultures consider there to be a ‘fourth trimester’ after pregnancy. In Mexico they term this period the ‘Closing of the Bones‘, in China it is known as ‘Zuo Yuezi’ which means ‘Sitting Out the Month’, or also known as the ‘Golden Month‘. In India, it is known as the ‘Sacred Window‘, in Vietnam it is called Nằmổ, which translates to ‘Lying in a Nest‘. The one thing that each of these ancient cultural traditions have in common is the dedication to deep rest and nourishment with community support for new mothers. Something that seems to have been almost lost in our modern, westernised way of living.

Aligning with our fast-paced lifestyle, the notion of postpartum woman ‘bouncing back’ has sadly become the new norm. While I understand that most women may not have anywhere near the support of these ancient cultures (the saying ‘it takes a village’ was truly meant in all its glory), the deep rest in consideration of the fourth trimester is something I hope the modern woman re-learns from her wise and knowing ancestors. I do feel there is a shift happening within this sacred space, and the new woman is beginning to acknowledge and apply these ancient traditions once more.

I believe the first, and probably the easiest step to true postpartum wellness, is through healing, nourishing, soulful food! This is why I created Partum. Essentials – to make the journey through your postpartum season as easy, and healthful as possible, while supporting your mind and whole body!
